Relaxation Room
This work was exhibited at Benjamin Franklin’s house in March 2005. The building has been under restoration in order to open it to the public as a museum, and 20 artists created their work inspired by the historic trail of the house. The show was exhibited during the night time (5-9pm), and on the stroke of each hour, small tours were conducted by only torchlight in the dark house.
My first impression when I got into the house was ‘silent’ and ‘spooky’. As beforehand, I had heard a story about the house, in which a workman performing the restoration works, dug up the remains of 10 dead bodies below the basement in 1998.
I chose a cubicle for my exhibition space, because it was placed in the scary basement and additionally I thought the ‘toilet’ as one of the places where people could often feel relaxed. Then I transferred the space into a ‘relaxation room’.
